CHOOSING USING A MILLING MACHINE …

The knee mill headstock is usually mounted to the front of a ram, Figure 8, which allows it to be repositioned front to back. Also, in some cases, the ram sits on a turret that allows fullcircle rotation in the vertical axis. Just as on a bench mill, the knee mill headstock can be rotated and set at ± 90 degrees left or right relative to

Review: Sieg U1 Vertical / Horizontal Mill

Recently I received from Sieg an evaluation sample of a new product: the U1 Vertical Horizontal mill. Vertical mills, since the 1950's or so, have become much more common than horizontal mills, but it wasn't always that way. The horizontal mill was developed first and for many years was a workhorse machine found in many machine shops.

Zeroing a universal mill table

I'm thinking you had a face mill mounted in the NMTB 40 spindle socket and were raising (or lowering) the Zaxis for the second cut across the workpiece. If that's the case and you got a step, it could be the Zaxis that's allowing the table to nod away from the column. Might be worth checking the Zaxis gibs to see if they need snugging up a bit.

Machine setup, cleaning and break in procedure went well. I have been using the mill for 5 months, mostly on aluminum but some steel as well without any problems. My only complaint is the arms on the X axis table locks get caught on the base and bend when moving Y axis inward, to remedy this I just replaced with knobs I made from aluminum.

It does not matter where the head is swung in an arc left/right on a round column mill or where the table is moved on "X" or "Y" on either type of mill.
